      <image:title>Exhibitions - Arch, 2017 - The chains are a way of addressing both the strength and brittleness of South African Masculinity, and have since come to stand for contemporaries masculinity’s fragility in general. Architecture tends to be indicative of the time that they were built in, and are often statements of power and aspiration. Using this precarious material to disrupt architecture with its own vocabulary is a way for me to challenge Britain’s Imperial past.</image:title>

      <image:title>Exhibitions - Arch, 2017 - I first developed my porcelain chains while on residency at the Florence Trust, which is housed inside St Saviors Church, London. They started as a way of exploring my families sailing history, which became the base for my fictional short story and subsequent installation Taxonomy (2015). Wearing the chain became a way to integrate the viewer into the installation, expanding it into a social space. The chains were then developed into an edition of wearable artworks, resulting in a photographic project. People were asked to wear the chains while ‘performing their masculinity’. This performative element came to a head with Architrave (2016) at Curious Body, where the chains were first used as an architectural intervention. In Liam (2018) the chains acted as an Adams Style swagging, responding to the Georgian architecture of the site. In their latest iteration Dependence (2019), the ambiguity of chains is addressed, as they both connect and constrain the anthropomorphised vessels.</image:title>

      <image:caption>Made in collaboration with Chris Parkes and Scott Humphreys, Pup exploring themes of longing and absence. When drawing the story board, I wanted to capture not only the Pup character, but the character of his absent partner as well. His clothes, art collection and interiors became his proxy, situated in newly refurbished luxury apartment in Clerkenwell. Each photo both stands alone and forms part of a larger, shifting narrative. It starts with our protagonist, bored and sprawled across the dining table, wearing a He Man jacket sewn from curtains found in Margate, an old King Kong movie poster in the background. We follow him through the house, amusing himself as he waits for his partner to come home from his job in the City. The story concludes with Pup falling asleep on the couch, spooning a celadon vase, the smell of his partner’s jacket on his nose.  Scott’s cheeky presence and Chris’ eye for cinematic shots made workshopping this shoot dynamic and unexpected. Talking through our experience of being gay men living in London, there are small nods to gay culture and our personal histories throughout. While these photos haven’t been exhibited in their own right, they became a kind of sketch for the Liam installation in Soho. Using artworks as props for a shoot also came to inform my proposal to Open Space in 2019, which resulted in The Lever.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Exhibitions - Curious Body, 2016 - I chose the architectural detail of the Fascis, a reoccurring motif in London’s architecture, as the starting point for my interrogation.  A Fascis is a bundle of sticks tied together, sometimes around an axe, and was a symbol of civic authority backed by military power in ancient Rome. This was a popular symbol of unity and order, especially during the neoclassical period, before it became the symbol for Italy’s Fascist party. I first became aware of this symbol during school assemblies at Wynberg Boy’s High School.  A teacher would dutifully demonstrate that a single stick can be easily broken, but that a bundle of sticks remains strong together. Fascis can also be translated as faggot, a bundle of sticks used to ignite a fire, and subsequently a gay slur with an inherent death threat alluding to the burning of homosexuals.</image:title>

My contemporary apothecary jar is engraved with the chemical formula for Zopiclone, an anti anxiety and insomnia medication with a dark side. After a visit to the V&amp;A's extensive Post Modern exhibition in 2012, they were angered by the exclusion of Duggie Fields, who they felt was one of the genre's most significant painters. They immediately offered him a solo show in Liverpool, and DuoVision's curatorial partnership began. The exhibition's success led to over 30 more championing other creative outsiders. Five years after their inaugural exhibition, they felt a thrilling sense of achievement when Duggie Fields deservedly exhibited one of his extraordinary paintings at the V&amp;A’</image:title>

      <image:title>Exhibitions - Babel, 2015 - ‘As curator at The Florence Trust, Kate Neave put together an exhibition of Alumni artists for Sluice, an alternative art fair held at the Bargehouse in the South Bank during Frieze Week. Sluice aims to test the established model for art fairs, providing an antidote to the commercial scene with space for not-for-profit, artist run and emerging spaces. The Florence Trust booth showcased the diversity and strength of Florence Trust artists' practices and played on the founding principle of exchange at the Trust.’</image:title>

Will Martin’s Babel (2015) is a tower of bisque-fired, wheel-thrown cylinders that were disseminated throughout the fair to international visitors so that their new locations and functions could later be documented by the artist. Help Yourself (2015) invited visitors to select a glazed ceramic vessel in which to take their refreshment of mint water.’</image:title>

      <image:caption>Inspired by Sweden and informed by our venue in London, this years Midsommar looked at Greek Myths and Merchant Ivory films for its visual cues. Divided into two parts, Midsommar Early was a pastoral vision with a picnic on the lawn, while Midsommar Late became a polite Bacchanal around the fire pit. A limited edition range of serving bowls was made specifically for this event, embodying the light simplicity of Swedish design, and the rough earthiness of this pagan celebration.</image:caption>

This welcome reintroduction via Paul Morris, with whom Martin has been in conversation for a few years now, has allowed for some beautiful encounters and no doubt another trip to the States.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Exhibitions - London Design Festival, 2023 - Will Martin x HART Shoreditch</image:title>
      <image:caption>For this commission, Will Martin was asked to create a water bottle that reflected the history and geography of Hart Hotel Shoreditch. The form was inspired by East London and the bottles excavated in the area, as well as the design details of the building itself. His aim was to capture and distill Hart’s aesthetic into beautiful everyday objects the guests could use. Placed in each room, they invite guests to engage with their tactility as well as their sustainable design principles. With water fountains placed on each floor, these sturdy ceramic carafes will replace disposable plastic bottled water and, hopefully, enhance our guests’ experience.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>“With the vitrines, I wanted to give the viewer a taste of my production processes. They show a - much tidier - version of my studio at home, with all my tools and inspo. The three stages that the clay goes through are represented by the three bottles in the first vitrine; raw, bisque and glazed. The second vitrine demonstrates the variety of surfaces and colors that can be achieved with a limited pallet. Using only ash, porcelain and found clay each bottle is a unique character, recording their production through squeezes, slaps, and cuts. I have bowls of these materials around my workstation so that I can loosely dip into them and paint the surface of the bottles once they have stiffened a bit. The vintage Victorian stoneware bottles in the display really inspired this range. Sourced from nearby Spitalfields Market, many of them were made in London. I love their signature honey dipped shoulders and angled necks”</image:caption>

The hotels unique design is a celebration of Shoreditch and its heritage as a centre for craftspeople and makers. Formerly a fabric mill, Hart’s distinctive design and historic homages continue through the restaurant and rooms and are reflected throughout the rest of the building.</image:title>
